Helix Rocked Flashbacks

A Helix is a three-dimensional spiral curve. Common objects formed like a helix are a spring and a screw.

The Canadian heavy metal band Helix, formed in 1974 in Kitchener, Ontario, definitely still have a spring in their steps.

Brian Vollmer, lead singer, is the only remaining member of the original band. He is joined by Jim Lawson and Rick VanDyk on guitars, Paul Fonseca on bass and Brent Niemi on drums.

Best known for their 1984 single "Rock You", the band has gone on to have many other successes such as "Deep Cuts The Knife", "Make Me Do (Anything You Want)", and "Wild In The Streets".

The band's video for the song "Gimme Gimme Good Lovin", released in 1984, caused a stir when it was learned that among the cast of porn stars who appear nude in the uncensored version, was Traci Lords who was 16 years old at the time.

Helix has toured with many big named acts including KISS, Aerosmith, Rush, Motorhead, Alice Cooper and Whitesnake.

On Thursday night Helix made a stop at Flashbacks.

Performing to an enthusiastic primarily thirty-something crowd, Helix had many reflecting back to old high school memories and antics.

Vollmer, after 34 years of performing, showed he still has a strong stage presence and has the vocal strength to deliver the music to the fans.

The 2005 Okanagan Music Awards Band of the Year winners, Ten2Nine, opened the show. They delivered a solid set and showed why many are pleased they are the Okanagan’s very own.
