The ashes of a beloved Okanagan grandmother have been found.

The family of Elaine Thompson have been dealing with a very stressful situation following her passing. Thompson, 69, passed away May 6 after losing her fight with cancer.

Her ashes were in the back of the family’s truck which was parked at the Orchard Park Shopping Centre Friday morning. When family members returned from an errand, they discovered the truck, along with the ashes, had been stolen.

Elaine’s granddaughter, Vikki Harman, says the ashes were found Saturday morning in Rutland.

“The truck and the ashes were found untouched. We are just so relieved to have them back as this has been so hard on all of us,” says Harman.

She says the family had been planning to scatter Thompson’s ashes on Sunday, Mother’s Day.

“After they were stolen we were just all so heart broken that we might not be able to honour her the way we hoped to.”

Harman says now that the ashes have been returned they will continue with their plan to scatter them at a location in Lake Country which was special to Thompson.
