Bouncer charged with assault, drugs

Kelowna RCMP are investigating whether a local nightclub bouncer went too far after allegedly assaulting a patron.

The incident occurred shortly after 2 a.m. Thursday in front of Liquid Zoo on Lawrence Avenue where a police officer witnessed a bouncer assaulting a patron.

"One of our members observed a bouncer at Liquid Zoo nightclub yelling at someone and grabbing that individual and throwing that person against a wall. At that point, the member placed the suspect (bouncer) under arrest for assault," says Constable, Julie Rattee.

The 20-year-old victim suffered a cut to the head.

Rattee says why the assault occurred is still under investigation, but she adds the officer had to act because the victim didn't stand a chance.

"I'm not an expert. I know they are able to control the scene in their establishment, but this took place outside and based on the observations of the police officer, it looked like the accused was almost twice the size of the victim."

Rattee adds that the 34-year-old bouncer was also found to be in possession of cocaine and that he is known to police.

"We have had dealings with this individual in the past, but nothing recently."

The manager of Liquid Zoo says he's been away for two days and is not aware of the alleged assault involving one of his employees.

The nightclub is owned by the Hells Angels.
