No injuries to report after an excavator caught fire at the Westside Landfill Thursday afternoon.

The incident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday.

Westside Fire and Rescue responded with 11 fire fighters and four vehicles.

"Crews reported a large column of heavy black smoke and found a fully involved excavator on top of a large pile of recycled wood," says Assistant Fire Chief, Darren Lee.

"Although the fire had spread to a pile of recycled wood, landfill staff was able to keep the fire partially contained using a water truck that was on site."

Lee says staff at the landfill also assisted in overhaul efforts, using several pieces of heavy equipment.

"The fire is under investigation and is being treated as accidental."

He adds quick action by both landfill staff and Westside Fire kept the blaze from spreading to the nearby woodlands.
