Grand will become Delta Hotel

The new name will be the "Delta Grand Okanagan Resort and Conference Centre."

Delta Hotels has confirmed it will take over management of the Kelowna hotel in late August. It will officially change names in October.

On Monday, Royal Host announced it had sold the hotel for $113 million to an unnamed buyer.

Regional Vice-President of Operations for Delta Hotels in B.C., Gordon Johnson, says Delta did not purchase the Grand.

"Delta typically doesn't own hotels. We are a management company," says Johnson.

A non-disclosure agreement in the management contract does not allow him to reveal the owner.

Johnson says the hotel will operate as an independent while staff training takes place. He says a capital improvement package is also planned.

"We have a capital improvement plan where we will be spending approximately $7 million over the course of three years, a fair amount of that over the first year I would think. Most of that will focus on guest room improvements and public areas."

As for current employees, Johnson says the company hopes to retain as many employees and services as possible.

"Our intent will be to make as little change as possible. We're hoping guests and employees alike will see almost no change at all."

Delta has long been rumoured to be interested in moving into the Kelowna marketplace, either with a new or current property.

"I think we have long desired to have a hotel in the Kelowna market. It has been a very strong market for a number of reasons in the interior of B.C. and I personally and our company professionally has long been interested in being there. We're delighted with this opportunity."
