Witnesses say a woman struck and killed by a vehicle in East Kelowna last weekend exchanged words with the driver minutes prior to her death.

The 30-year-old victim was killed Friday night as she crouched on the side of Fitzgerald Road. A man was charged with dangerous driving causing death.

The incident happened in a private lane way at the edge of Balbir Wariache's property.

He says his family heard the victim and a man arguing at around supper time Friday night.

Wariache says the person the victim was arguing with, was 54-year-old Ron Young who had recently moved from Beaverdell and had been living in a motorhome parked on Wariache's property.

He says that on the day of the killing, Young had been told by Wariache to move his trailer because he had outstayed his welcome. He says that when he came back, the trailer was gone and that he noticed the victim standing at the end of his lane way with a cat cage.

"I went up to her and told her that I was concerned because it was very dark. I asked her to leave or I would call her a cab. I was uncomfortable with her being there sitting on the roadside."

Wariache says the woman told him that she wasn't bothering anyone and that she was looking for her cat. He says the woman appeared to be coherent but despondent. He adds that he had never seen the victim before.

Wariache says that moments later, one of his daughters heard a vehicle start-up, accelerate and speed away. They ran out and found the victim on the side of the road and called 911.

The victim has not been identified.

Meantime, police say the charge of dangerous driving causing death against Young has been stayed.

"It's reflective of the fact that more investigative work needs to be done," says Constable, Julie Rattee.

She adds that Young could face charges in connection with the hit and run later.

But Rattee says Young did have an outstanding warrant for his arrest dealing with an impaired charged from 2006.

Young appeared in court Tuesday and pled guilty to the lesser charge of driving over .08 and was issued an $800 fine before being released.
