Breakfast and lunch programs push on through pandemic

Students still getting lunch

The cancellation of classes has not stopped the Central Okanagan School District from distributing 7,000 breakfasts and lunches to youth across the region this week.

SD 23 says an entire week of meals are now picked up at once by families to minimize contact with others.

"We are so grateful for the work of staff and the generosity of volunteers that keeps these vital programs running in these difficult times," said Moyra Baxter, Chairperson of the Board of Education.

"More than ever it highlights the key role of schools in the community, making sure that we not only educate youth, but help everyone be ready to learn."

The school district says it is also focusing on confidentiality for the families involved in the program.

The provincial government has directed all B.C. school districts to continue supporting vulnerable students throughout the pandemic.
